During the 1978 World Cup in Argentina, the Netherlands National Team reached the final once again, just as they had done four years earlier. The final against the host nation was lost 3–1. In the group stage with Peru, Scotland and Iran, the Netherlands progressed thanks to a better goal difference than Scotland. In the second round, the Netherlands started furiously, sweeping Austria aside with a 5–1 victory. After a draw against West Germany and a win over Italy, the team reached the final. After 90 minutes the score was level at 1–1. In extra time, Argentina proved to have the greater stamina and eventually won 3–1. Some of the players who wore this shirt during the 1978 World Cup included Haan, Rep, Krol, Neeskens and Rensenbrink.
